Basal cell tumors are epithelial neoplasms that originate from the basal cells of the epidermis and the hair follicles, sebaceous glands, and sweat glands. In these tumors, the cells do not show significant differentiation toward the mature adnexal structures normally found in the skin.

Definition
The classification of basal cell tumors has changed over time. Some neoplasms that were historically included in this group, such as trichoblastoma and apocrine ductal adenoma, are now classified as distinct tumor types based on their morphological and histopathological characteristics. Therefore, the term “basal cell tumor” used in older literature may encompass a broader group of neoplasms than the current classification.

Etiology
The exact causes underlying the development of basal cell tumors remain largely unknown. However, there is evidence that certain environmental, viral, and genetic factors may contribute to tumor development.
In one reported canine case, basal cell carcinoma was associated with chronic solar dermatitis resulting from prolonged exposure to sunlight. This finding suggests that chronic ultraviolet-induced damage may contribute to tumor development in at least some patients.
The detection of papillomavirus DNA in certain basal cell tumors has also raised the possibility of a viral contribution. However, this association has not been demonstrated for all basal cell tumors, and the exact role of papillomavirus in tumor development remains unclear.
There is also limited evidence suggesting that genetic alterations may play a role in pathogenesis. A reciprocal chromosomal translocation, t(10;35), was identified in a canine basal cell tumor exhibiting malignant features. This finding suggests that chromosomal alterations may accompany the neoplastic transformation process in some cases.

Pathophysiology
The majority of basal cell tumors exhibit benign biological behavior. Basal cell epithelioma represents a benign form, whereas basal cell carcinoma represents the malignant form of these tumors.
Although malignant cases do occur, basal cell carcinomas are generally considered low-grade malignant tumors. However, the biological behavior of the tumor may vary from case to case.
Some basal cell tumors may extend into the surrounding dermal tissues and demonstrate lymphatic or vascular invasion. Nevertheless, metastatic spread is not a common feature.
When metastasis does occur, this behavior has been reported to be more common in cats than in dogs.
Therefore, particularly in cases with malignant histopathological features, evaluation should not be limited to the primary mass. Local invasion and potential metastatic spread should also be incorporated into the clinical assessment.
Overall, although basal cell tumors are generally benign cutaneous neoplasms, histopathological diagnosis is essential for determining the tumor's true biological behavior and for planning an appropriate clinical approach.
